Systematic assessment of suicide prevention strategies in health apps

Abstract: Suicide represents one of the most common causes of preventable death worldwide. Health apps may assist with identification and management of persons at risk. A systematic assessment of 69 depression management and suicide prevention apps was conducted to assess general characteristics, content compliance with evidence-based guidelines and trustworthiness of apps. Five apps offered all six evidence-based strategies. Crisis helpline numbers were inaccurate in 6/69 apps. 51% of apps belonged to the Health & Fitness category.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: Attendees will gain insight on the characteristics of suicide prevention and depression management apps, their adherence with evidence-based clinical guidelines, and potential risks associated with using apps for suicide prevention.
