Description

Abstract: At Hennepin Healthcare we had an outdated handoff tool and process. This led to safety, quality and provider satisfaction issues. We proposed the use of a hackathon style event to solve this problem. We assembled a multidisciplinary group to problem solve using LEAN principals and develop a deliverable solution in a single 8 hr session. The project culminated with a new tool in the EMR and revamped clinical process for giving patient handoffs.

Describe the new knowledge and additional skills the participant will gain after attending your presentation.: The two takeaways from this poster would be the utilization and leverage of a hackathon-style event and the ability to customize the Handoff tool within the Epic environment to meet the needs of various inpatient resident programs. I would hope that viewers of the poster would understand the structure and steps required to execute a hackathon-style event within a healthcare organization. Another takeaway would be the value of clinician engagement and involvement in projects related to clinical workflow and improvement and the enhancement in quality and satisfaction that can be gained from this approach to problem solving.
