With the recent finalization of its rule implementing the 21^st Century Cures Act health interoperability and information blocking provisions, HHS is ushering in a new period for clinical informatics. Health IT is driving the transformation of healthcare delivery through use of innovation, competition, better data, and more timely information. In light of the COVID-19 public health emergency we expect to see health systems leverage modern web-based and mobile technologies to address the needs of patients, providers and other stakeholders.

As standards-based, open APIs become more ubiquitous, patients will have continued access to their data using a host of new apps; clinicians will have new interfaces to see and use patient data; there will exist new opportunities for researchers to use clinical data. So too will these changes bring new challenges to patient privacy, clinician burden, and to the ongoing management of clinical information systems.

In this closing session panel discussion, attendees will hear from the HHS Office of National Coordinator for Health IT and a host of stakeholders – including patients, clinicians, and industry – who will provide their views on the final rule and its implications for clinical informatics.
